A protein skimmer pulls dissolved organic waste out of saltwater before it breaks down into nitrate and phosphate. It works by whipping water into a column of fine bubbles. Organic molecules cling to those bubbles, ride them up into a collection cup, and leave the tank as dark, foul-smelling skimmate. For most reef and fish-heavy saltwater tanks, it's the hardest-working piece of filtration you'll own.
This guide covers our picks by install type and tank size. It also covers the part most roundups skip: how to size a skimmer for the real load in your tank, not the optimistic gallon rating on the box. Not sure you need one at all? Read do you need a protein skimmer first.
How to choose a protein skimmer
Size for bioload, not gallons
Manufacturers rate skimmers by tank volume, and those ratings usually assume a lightly stocked reef. A tank with heavy feeding, lots of fish, or large messy eaters like tangs and triggers produces far more waste than the rating imagines. A widely shared rule of thumb is to treat the rating as a light-bioload ceiling:
- Light bioload: a model rated close to your actual water volume is usually fine.
- Moderate stocking: go up one size.
- Heavy feeding or big fish: go up one size and look for a model with an adjustable DC pump, so you can dial it back if it's too much.
Oversizing wildly isn't ideal either. A skimmer that can't build a stable foam head in a lightly loaded tank will sit there producing very little.
Install type: in-sump, HOB, or internal
- In-sump skimmers are the most efficient and quietest option, but they need a sump under the tank.
- Hang-on-back (HOB) skimmers suit tanks without a sump.
- Internal nano skimmers fit the rear chambers of all-in-one tanks.
We cover the trade-offs in depth in in-sump vs HOB protein skimmers.
Footprint and water depth
This is the spec that burns people. Every in-sump skimmer has a recommended water depth range and a footprint. Measure your sump's skimmer chamber, both length by width and how deep the water actually sits, before you buy. A skimmer running outside its depth range will overflow or barely produce.
DC vs AC pumps
DC pumps let you adjust air and water intake electronically. Many can also be paused during feeding or maintenance. They cost more, but they make tuning much easier and let one skimmer handle a wider range of bioloads. AC pumps are simpler and cheaper, with tuning done only by a gate valve or wet/dry adjustment.
Everyday livability
These details matter more than they look on a spec sheet:
- Noise: an air silencer quiets the intake hiss.
- Cup cleaning: removable cups and wide necks are easier to clean. A cup-cleaning wiper is a nice bonus.
- Overflow protection: a float switch or overflow sensor cuts power before skimmate spills back into the sump.

Setting up and breaking in a new skimmer
- Rinse, don't scrub. Rinse the body with RODI to remove dust. Skip soap entirely.
- Set the water depth. Place it in the skimmer chamber within the manufacturer's recommended depth range. Use a stand or riser if needed.
- Start conservative. Begin with the water level in the body low, then raise it gradually over several days until you get a steady foam head reaching the cup neck.
- Expect a break-in period. New skimmers commonly produce erratic foam, or almost nothing, for the first week or so while manufacturing residues wear off and a biofilm forms. Don't over-adjust during this window.
- Tune for wet or dry. A wetter skim collects lighter, more watery skimmate and removes more. A drier skim collects dark, concentrated gunk. Neither is wrong; adjust based on your nutrient levels.
Maintenance that keeps a skimmer productive
- Clean the cup and neck regularly. A dirty neck breaks bubbles before they reach the cup, and output drops noticeably.
- Soak the pump periodically. A citric acid or vinegar solution dissolves calcium buildup on the impeller and needle wheel. Rinse thoroughly before reinstalling.
- Check the air line and silencer. Salt crust restricts airflow, which quietly cuts performance.
- Watch after changes. New salt batches, additives, or food brands can briefly make a skimmer overflow or go flat. Give it a day before re-tuning.
Your skimmer also needs a sturdy home. If you're planning a sump build, check our aquarium stand and cabinet picks for sump-ready options with enough interior height for a tall skimmer.
Frequently asked questions
What size protein skimmer do I need?
Treat the manufacturer's gallon rating as a light-bioload figure. For moderate stocking, go one size up; for heavy feeding or large fish, go up and consider a DC model you can dial back.
Are hang-on-back skimmers any good?
Yes. Quality HOB skimmers work well on tanks without a sump. In-sump skimmers are generally more efficient and quieter, but a good HOB is far better than no skimmer on a heavily stocked sumpless reef.
Why isn't my new skimmer producing anything?
New skimmers commonly need a break-in period of about a week before producing steady foam. Check water depth in the chamber, air intake, and that the water level in the skimmer body is set high enough.
How often should I clean a protein skimmer cup?
Many reefers clean the cup and neck weekly or whenever buildup is visible. Soak the pump in a citric acid or vinegar solution every few months to remove calcium deposits.
Do freshwater tanks need protein skimmers?
No. Skimmers rely on saltwater's properties to create fine, stable foam. They don't work meaningfully in freshwater.
